The following are some frequently asked questions (FAQ) about Tibetan Mastiffs in the show ring.
While getting started may appear to be a challenging task, there are basic steps you may take. Attend an obedience class right away! For starters, it’s a fantastic way to socialize your dog in a safe setting. Learn the fundamentals by teaching your puppy how to walk on a leash and what it means to be a team. Because TMs are often bored, it takes a lot of time and patience for your pup to learn how to focus on you.
Attend your local kennel club’s handling/conformation lessons and seminars! Make your way to a dog show and keep an eye out for other large breeds on display. Search for a mentor/handler and ask as many questions as you can. Experienced show people, whether they are closely engaged in the TM industry or not, tend to have a lot to say. Bring a video camera with you. It will be an invaluable resource as you study the fundamentals of conformation, structure, and movement.
Can you give me any advice on what treats to give Mastiffs for training and in the show ring?
Erika and her TM Karma taught us how to make one of the recipes. Erika refers to these as “liver muffins,” and she advises that after cooking, you should leave the house for around 20 minutes and open the windows!
-2 cups of flour
-1 lb beef liver
-1 tbsp. Parmigiano-Reggiano
-1 tsp. powdered garlic
-approx. 1-2 quarts of water
In a food processor, combine all ingredients except the water, then add water until the mixture resembles a thick pudding. Fill muffin tins halfway with the mixture. Preheat oven to 350°F and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until fully done.
